Another Bandera town classic is Arkey Blue’s Silver Dollar Saloon, also established in the 1930s. This basement honky-tonk ain’t much to look at, but it does have history. Hank Williams Sr carved his name in the underside of one of the tables when he played here regularly, and Ernest Tubbs and Willie Nelson also came by quite often. Every Friday and Saturday night it still has live country-and-western bands, as do a number of places in town. Even the new coffee house has gotten into hosting acts. There might be a local pickin’ circle somewhere to listen to or a restaurant steak night with local entertainment. The friendly Bandera County Visitors Bureau (www.banderacowboycapital.com) keeps a listing of all the goings on. In addition to Arkey and his Blue Cowboys, Art & Lisa are another regular country act worth listening out for.
